NOT Eligible: HUF, Companies/Firms/LLPs, loans for siblings/parents, loans from friends/relatives, personal loans repurposed for education.
Key rule: Person whose name is on loan + who repays = claims. Even if student is on loan, parent paying EMI claims if loan is in parent's name.
What Loans Qualify Under Section 80E
Eligible: Public sector banks (SBI, PNB, BoB, Canara), Private banks (HDFC, ICICI, Axis), NBFCs (HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, InCred), approved charitable institutions (Section 10(23C) / 12AA registered), govt schemes (PM Vidyalaxmi, Bihar Student Credit Card).
NOT Eligible: Loans from friends/relatives/employers, personal loan repurposed for education, credit card EMI, foreign banks without India branch.
What Education Qualifies?

What's Deductible - Interest ONLY
Claimable: Entire interest portion of EMI in FY (NO upper limit) - whether Rs 50K or Rs 5L. Interest via EMI/pre-EMI/lump sum all eligible.
NOT Claimable: Principal repayment, processing fees, late charges. Pre-EMI interest claimable only after repayment begins.
Rs 10L loan @ 10% for 7 years = Rs 4L total interest. 30% slab = Rs 1.2L lifetime tax saving spread over 7 years.
Duration - Maximum 8 Years Rule
- Deduction starts from the year repayment begins (NOT from loan disbursement)
- Maximum 8 consecutive financial years OR until interest fully paid - whichever earlier
- Year 1 of claim = Year you start paying EMI
- After 8 years, no more deduction even if interest still pending
Strategy: Take longer tenure loan (10-12 years) to maximize 8-year benefit, prepay only after 8 years if possible. Short 5-year loan = miss 3 years of benefit.
