Who Can Open NPS Vatsalya Account?

Eligible: Indian resident / NRI / OCI parent or legal guardian for child below 18. Single parent allowed. Multiple children = separate Vatsalya accounts each.

Tax Benefits Under NPS Vatsalya

Section 80C (Old Regime Only): Parent's contribution = part of Rs 1.5 lakh 80C limit (combined with PPF/ELSS/EPF/LIC etc.).

Section 80CCD(1B) (BOTH regimes per Budget 2025): Additional Rs 50,000 OVER AND ABOVE 80C. CATCH: Shared with parent's own NPS Tier-I 80CCD(1B) limit. If parent already claiming Rs 50K for own NPS = NO extra Vatsalya benefit. If parent NOT contributing own NPS = Rs 50K NEW benefit.

Partial Withdrawal Rules (After 3 Years)

Up to 25% of contributions (excluding returns) for specific purposes:

Allowed: Higher education (Class 12+), severe illness (cancer/kidney/transplant), disability expenses, marriage (special cases 18-21).

Rules: First withdrawal after 3 years, max 3 withdrawals during tenure, max 25% of contributions each (NOT corpus). Tax-free for education/illness/disability. Documentation mandatory (admission letter / medical bills / marriage certificate).

When child turns 18: Auto-convert to NPS Tier-I (All Citizen). Fresh KYC within 3 months (by now-adult subscriber). Self takes over management + investment decisions. Parent contributions stop.
